Umehara on NHK radio

Daigo Umehara has joined an NHK's morning radio show yesterday for an usual interview about his career. But the most interesting thing probably is he got to choose 2 songs to play.

Umehara's selections
  • Chiisana Funanori (Ending theme of anime Takarajima)
  • Por una Cabeza

Umehara actually mentioned about Al Pacino in the tango scene in Scent of a Woman (his favorite movie) in which the song Por una Cabeza was played.

Console version of USF4 has all old costumes

It's announced that the console versions of Ultra Street Fighter IV full game will come with all costumes from SF4, SSF4, SSF4AE. (USF4 Upgrade does not count.)

Netplay DLC for Vanguard Princess proposed

It's reported that the publisher of Vanguard Princess has launched an Indiegogo campaign to reward developers that create a Vanguard Princess Netplay DLC on Steam.

Vanguard Princess was originally an obsolete freeware, but an English publisher picked it up and eventually released on Steam in March. The game still has no netplay nor some important basic functions.

P4U2 coming to PS3 August 28

It's announced that Persona 4 The Ultimax Ultra Suplex Hold is coming to PlayStation 3 on August 28, with Rise Kujikawa and her shadow as playable characters.

Karipaku's new work

Something you probably don't know about Karipaku, the Cody player, is she's good at drawing. And she used to draw some posters for fighting game tournaments.

This's the latest artwork that she just completed today. It's a promotional illustration for a mobile game called Valiant Legion. Interestingly, this artwork actually looks better than the official ones!

Under Night In-Birth Exe:Late coming to PS3 July 24

It's revealed that Under Night In-Birth Exe:Late is coming to PlayStation 3 on July 24. The console version will have all characters from the arcade, plus new character Nanase. Although Famitsu added that Nanase won't be the only one.

While the publisher of the arcade version is Ecole, the console version will be published by Arc System Works. (ASW's Mori actually gave some advice when designing character Hyde.)

There'll be both package and download version (both 5,800 yen).

Ayano: L2P

Assistant Producer Ayano has made a list of known bugs in USF4 today in a blog post.

- Guy's EX Bushin Senpu Kyaku doesn't consume EX gauge after KO'ing opponent in some case.
- Characters in the background of Blast Furnace stage don't move in some case.
- Unable to register My Shop at the mobile site.

But regarding Hugo vs. Dhalsim matchup, Ayano explained that it's not that bad matchup.

- He said Hugo has high strength and vitality.
- Hugo's moves such as crMP and Giant Palm Bomber can do favorable trade to Dhalsim's MK (hitbox and damage-wise).
- He pointed out that Hugo's standing HP has armor property. It can be used to fight projectile and jump-in attack.
- He said the game just came out so there're still many things to learn.

Umehara: Xian was my prime target

4Gamer.net posted an event report of TOPANGA World League yesterday and it also has short interview with Daigo Umehara.

Notes
- Umehara felt that winning the league with Ryu is a big accomplishment.
- His prime target was Xian. And since Xian said to him "It's not over yet" after winning 10-0 at Mad Catz Unveiled PAX Prime 2013.
- In the last day, Umehara aimed to win the league so he paid attention to Bon more than Xiao Hai, since winning Xiao Hai would only guarantee him 2nd place.

Umehara confirmed for USF4 exhibition at Chokaigi 2014

It's announced today that an USF4 exhibition matches will be held in this year's Chokaigi (Game Area).

Participating players are Daigo Umehara (was also in 2012 and 2013), Bon-chan, Momochi, Tokido, Mago, and Kazunoko. Commentator is R.

Chokaigi is a yearly grand-scale Niconico fan event that began in 2012. While the event is struggling to gain some profit, the growing number of the attendees indicates that they're doing something right.

For reference
Comic Market - 550,000 attendees (3 days)
Tokyo Game Show - 210,000 attendees (2 public days)
Chokaigi 2 (2013) - 100,000 attendees (and 5 million viewers on net) (2 days)

Chokaigi 3 (2014) will held on April 26-27 at Makuhari Messe (same location as Tokyo Game Show).

Update: The exhibition will be held on April 26 at 16:00 JST. A live streaming is planned.

There'll be 3 matches, using first-to-five format.
  • Kazunoko vs. Mago
  • Momochi vs. Tokido
  • Umehara vs. Bon-chan
Producer Sugiyama and AP Ayano will also come to talk about PS3/Xbox 360 version of USF4 that will be released in Japan on August 7.

This's the reason you should watch Sega stream tomorrow

Nagisa (MC/cosplayer/model) is set to cosplay as Kuroyukihime* (picture below) on Sega's stream tomorrow.

The stream will serve as a PR and tournament (held last weekend) report of 3 fighting games that are being distributed via Sega's network APM: Guilty Gear Xrd, Dead or Alive 5 Ultimate: Arcade, Dengeki Bunko Fighting Climax.

Itabashi Zangief and Asuka Okame (Erio** voice actress) will also participate.

*A playable character in DBFC from Accel World
**A support character in DBFC from Denpa Onna to Seishun Otoko

USF4 Day 1 Japanese players impressions

Kazunoko
"[Seth has no future.]"

Uryo
"Sakura's long Tatsu combo doesn't work on some characters anymore, and also weak. This is bad. Did I drop the combo? I hope so. Is it because her hitbox or opponents' hitbox? Need more time to verify."

KSK
"I couldn't win with Hugo. I didn't see anyone won too. This's like hard mode."
"It seems Abel becomes stronger."

Bon-chan
"No one used Elena. But I know you all really want to! (laugh)"
"Yun is now in higher tier."
"Sagat is strong as expected."
"Tiger Cannon is lame"

R (commentator and Guy player)
"Playing Guy becomes fun again."

Acqua
"Yang gets better."
"Cammy is still strong."

Amiyu
"Gen is still doing ok."

Reiketsu
"(Claw)'s adjustments barely keep me interested"

Kindevu
"All I can hear from the cabinets is Condor Spire. Hawk OP?"

Gone in 17 Seconds - Without Ultra - Watch Umehara Hugo and what he can do

Taito had Daigo Umehara demo-play Hugo in the latest promotional video, but it seems like Umehara actually is into this character and did well with it in the USF4 premiere event today.

First USF4 touanaments announced for Japan

Taito announced in Ultra Street Fighter IV premiere event today that three separated USF4 tournaments will be held.

"Grade C" tournaments will be held at (presumably) Taito game centers in Japan.

"Grade B" tournament will have the winners of Taito Cup, a TOPANGA tournament, and unannounced competition competing.

"Grade A" tournament will have qualifiers in Tokyo and Osaka. There'll be both single and 3 on 3 tournament. Each has 1 million yen prize money from Taito. (Obviously not organized by Capcom, since Capcom Japan is known to not give prize money.)

USF4 Ryu demo-played by Umehara in new promo video

Taito has posted a new video of Ryu in Ultra Street Fighter IV demo-played by Daigo Umehara.

Notes
- crMK +1 frame (not sure he refers to on hit or or block since it seems different on final changes)
- jMP cancel-able
- He said the biggest change is EX SRK>FADC>Metsu SRK will get animation-locked. U2 becomes more viable option.

Is Mago the worst fighting game teacher?

Let's say..... You're made to teach a girl who doesn't know anything about fighting games at all. What's the worst things you can do to her?

- Let her choose Yang as her first character.
- Teach her to P-linking BEFORE teaching her how to hold stick.
- Teach her to hold stick with 3 fingers.
- Teach her techniques (combo, hit-confirm, reversal) instead of how to win.

That's what Mago did to Misaki Suzuki (a junior voice actress), a new student of TOPANGA Fight Club 3.

In the end, this girl still doesn't know how to approach the opponent or realize that it's the damage you do to win, not a special move or combo.

Confirmed: TOPANGA World League not available outside Japan

As we pointed out, it turn out that the warning wasn't a mistake.

TOPANGA has confirmed that "TOPANGA World League is not available in outside of Japan."

We suspect that the decision comes from Niconico side, since they co-organize the league, and earn estimated 30% of the profit. They want to block the foreign pirates who are immune from legal actions.

Now the next question is does that mean TOPANGA League won't be available outside Japan forever?

Mago's main character in USF4 still undecided, 95% not Fei Long

Mago has revealed tonight the probability of his main character in Ultra Street Fighter IV.

Sagat 30%
Oni 30%
Chun-Li 20% (in hard training)
Juri 5%
Fei Long 5%
Other 10%

It'd be interesting if Mago happens to main Chun-Li. Because Mago was the first top player who picked Fei Long in 2010, and then popularised it. Mago also taught Fuudo, who later won Evo 2011.

Some of well-known Chun-Li players (SF4 series)
  • Nuki (since 2008, now switching back from Seth to Chun-Li again)
  • Nemo (before Yang)
  • Ricky Ortiz (sub)
  • Infiltration (sub)

TOPANGA World League streams not available outside Japan?

UPDATE: Confirmed: TOPANGA World League not available outside Japan

The stream links of TOPANGA World League are now revealed. But there's "This program is not available in outside of Japan." at the bottom of the pages. There's no warning like this before in The 3rd TOPANGA League.

Note that a warning like this usually means Niconico will block non-Japanese IP addresses, preventing the users from accessing the streams.

We're not sure if this's a mistake or misunderstanding or not. The league invited foreign players but also blocks foreign viewers? We suggest you wait until there's clarification before buying the ticket (if you're outside Japan).

Day 2 (April 11, Fri)

Book Evo Moment 37 now available for purchase

The book about Daigo Umehara's legendary comeback in 2004 called "Evo Moment 37" is available for purchase today.

Umehara interview from WonderGoo event

4Gamer.net posted a new interview of Daigo Umehara from the event at WonderGoo from March 29.

- A sequel to Umehara: To Live is to game is in work.
- He insists that quality over quantity when it comes to choosing which tournament to compete. He chooses to have a lot of preparation for good performances for 1-2 competitions a year.
- He wants to win Evo 2014, and he probably won't participate any tournament before that.
- He will use Ryu for Evo 2014, since USF4 will be released (in Japan) just 3 months before Evo. There's no time to invest on other characters.
- He thinks Ryu doesn't change much in USF4. Red Focus probably won't help him do more damage.
- He's been using Ryu for 6 years now so he was hoping for more changes to Ryu. He just wants new stuff to show to audience.
- He'll try other characters after Evo. He mentioned Guile and grapplers such as T. Hawk or Zangief.

KSK, Nuki, Kokujin confirmed for Evo 2014

It's revealed that KSK, Nuki, Kokujin, Sentos (MC and Dictator player) now have plane tickets for Evolution 2014.

This's not surprising since they all now host their own pay-per-view internet show on Niconico. They'll surely stream something from Las Vegas. But while they're more like entertainers now, don't let your guard down when you play them in the (USF4) pools!

Note that this's Nuki's first Evo in SF4 era (last time was 2008). He was supposed to be with Kokujin in Evo 2012. KSK participated in 2010 and 2012.
